Ihr Kennzeichnen ist die Rückenflosse, die direkt über den Augen beginnt.

Der Kiemendeckel hat normalerweise zwei Stacheln.

Man findet sie meistens auf dem Boden wo sie ihren abgeflachten Körper von den Wellen hin- und herschaukeln lassen, somit ähneln sie einem Blatt und sind gut getarnt.

Je nach Art werden sie 4 bis 80 cm lang.
