Man erkennt sie an der eingedrückten Stirnpartie, der Unterkiefer ist länger als der Oberkiefer.
Je nach Art werden sie zwischen 36 cm und 1,40 m lang.

Silbrig - olivfarben, sie haben eine auffällige schwarze Seitenlinie, und der vordere Teil ihres Kopfes ist abgeflacht.
Bevorzugt die Nähe von Mangroven, gerne an abgeflachten Stellen, wobei sie gelegentlich aber auch über flache Fleckenriffe und Seegraswiesen schwimmen.
Scheu, neigt aber dazu, Taucher einfach zu ignorieren.

Silvery-olive coloured, they have a conspicuous black lateral line and the front part of their head is flattened.
Favours the vicinity of mangroves, preferring flattened areas, although they occasionally swim over shallow patch reefs and seagrass beds.
Shy, but tends to simply ignore divers.
