Sie unterscheiden sich aufgrund ihrer marinen Lebensweise in einigen Merkmalen deutlich von anderen Schlangen.
Das auffälligste sichtbare Merkmal ist der seitlich abgeflachte Schwanz, der allen Seeschlangen gemein ist und der besseren Fortbewegung im Wasser dient.
Sie werden zwischen 1,2 und 1,4 Metern lang, einige Arten können jedoch auch deutlich über 2 Meter lang werden.

Due to their marine lifestyle, they differ significantly from other snakes in some characteristics.
The most conspicuous visible feature is the laterally flattened tail, which is common to all sea snakes and is used for better locomotion in the water.
They grow to between 1.2 and 1.4 metres in length, although some species can grow to well over 2 metres.
