Sie scheren die dünne Algenschicht ab, die die meisten Steine in flachem Wasser bedeckt.
Sie besitzen Strahlen, die ein Gift enthalten, und sollten daher mit Vorsicht behandelt werden.
Je nach Art erreichen sie eine Größe zwischen 20 und 45 cm.

In kleinen Gruppen schweben sie oft an einer Stelle.
An den Brustflossen haben sie große spitze und giftige Hartstrahlen, deren Stich extrem schmerzhaft ist und der Schmerz mindestens eine halbe Stunde anhält.

Gewöhnlich immer paarweise unterwegs.
