Einleitung
Introduction
Sie sind sehr enge Verwandte der Seesterne und zeichnen sich wie diese durch eine sekundäre, fünfstrahlige Symmetrie aus.
Die Zentralscheibe ist sehr klein, die Arme sind von ihr deutlich abgesetzt.
Saugnäpfe an den Füßchen fehlen.
Die Fortbewegung erfolgt durch das Bewegen der Arme, wodurch sie recht flink werden.
Die Tiere sind sehr empfindlich gegen Berührungen, die Arme werden bei Gefahr oft abgeworfen, in der Regel aber wieder regeneriert.

They are very close relatives of starfish and, like them, are characterised by a secondary, five-rayed symmetry.
The central disc is very small and the arms are clearly separated from it.
There are no suction cups on the feet.
Locomotion is achieved by moving the arms, which makes them quite agile.
The animals are very sensitive to touch, the arms are often thrown off in case of danger, but are usually regenerated again.

Dünne Arme, starke Verzweigung, bilden wenn ausgebreitet ein fächerförmiges Planktonfangnetz.
Tagsüber findet man sie zusammengerollt an Gorgonien sitzend oder in dunklen Löchern, nachts rollen sie dann Ihre Arme aus und filtern quer zur Strömung ausgerichtet Plankton aus dem Wasser.

Thin arms, strongly branched, form a fan-shaped plankton net when spread out.
During the day they can be found curled up on gorgonians or sitting in dark holes, at night they roll out their arms and filter plankton out of the water, orientated at right angles to the current.

Die relativ langen Arme sind mit zahlreichen Dornen bedeckt, von ihnen bekam der Stern seinen Namen.
Normal versteckt er sich z. B. unter Steinen oder Korallen.
Dunkel mit hellen oder cremefarbigen Markierungen.

Farbe: braun, mit grauweiß bzw schwarzen Bändern oder Flecken.
Die häufigste Art in der Karibik, sie leben fast überall im Riff.
