Einleitung
Introduction
Es gibt 5 Gattungen und über 65 Arten.
Die Scheinschnapper sind eng mit den Straßenkehrern verwandt. Sie ernähren sich normalerweise von kleinen im Sand vergrabenen Tieren.
Sie sind protogyne Zwitter.
Im Laufe ihres Lebens sind sie zuerst Weibchen und wandeln sich dann zum Männchen um.
Je nach Art werden sie zwischen 9 und 36 cm groß.

Am Kopf haben sie gelbe Streifen, ein dunkler rot umrandeter perlweißer Streifen zieht sich vom Maul bis zur weichen Rückenflosse.
Knapp unter der Basis der hinteren Hälfte der weichen Rückenflossenstrahlen, ist ein weißlicher Fleck zu erkennen.
