Einleitung
Introduction
Es gibt über 160 Arten dieser Familie.
Sie sind gierige Jäger, die kleine Fische jagen.
Aber sie sind auch Opfer des Fischfangs, insbesondere für die chinesischen Märkte in Ostasien.
So sind z.B. auf den maledivischen Riffen sehr viel weniger große Barsche zu sehen.
Die meisten Arten werden zwischen 20 und 80 cm lang, der Riesenzackenbarsch erreicht eine Länge von über 2 m.

There are over 160 species in this family.
They are greedy hunters that prey on small fish.
But they are also victims of fishing, especially for the Chinese markets in East Asia.
For example, there are far fewer large perch to be seen on the Maldivian reefs.
Most species grow to between 20 and 80 cm in length, with the giant grouper reaching a length of over 2 meters.

Auf allen Flossen und dem Körper rötliche bis dunkle Punkte.
Er kann drastisch bis hin zu weiß verblassen, aber ebenso dunkler werden.
Bewohnt felsige, flache sowie auch tiefe Riffe.
Scheu in flachen Gewässern, wo er sich dann oft in dunkle Nischen verzieht, in tieferen Riffzonen läßt er Taucher jedoch nah an sich heran.

Eine weitverbreitete aber seltene Riesen-Art von mindestens 300 kg.
Diese Art wurde oft als für den Menschen gefährlich bezeichnet, bis jetzt gibt es aber noch keine bestätigte, unprovozierte Angriffe.
Verletzungen resultieren immer aus dem Füttern der Riesen mit der Hand.
Im Gegensatz dazu ist diese seltene Art durch Angeln und Harpunieren in vielen Gebieten bedroht.
