Introduction


There are 2 genera and 5 species.

A striking feature is the massive head with very strong jaws,

which have strong conical fangs at the front

and one or two rows of strong molars at the back.

Depending on the species, they grow to a length of 1.12 to 2.40 m.

Maximum length: 1.5 m

Depth: up to 400 metres

It crushes sea urchins, crabs and mussels in particular with its powerful jaws.

They are mainly found off Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
