There are around 56 species

Due to their marine lifestyle, they differ significantly from other snakes in some characteristics.

The most conspicuous visible feature is the laterally flattened tail,

which is common to all sea snakes

and is used for better locomotion in the water.

They grow to between 1.2 and 1.4 metres in length,

although some species can grow to well over 2 metres.

Depth: 0 - 200 m

Dive for at least 30 minutes

They mostly eat fish, especially bottom-dwelling species such as gobies and pipe eels.

If you leave them alone, you need have no fear of a bite.
