Introduction


 There are 5 genera and over 65 species.

The false snappers are closely related to the road sweepers.

They normally feed on small animals buried in the sand.

They are protogynous hermaphrodites.

 In the course of their lives,

they are first females and then change into males.

Depending on the species, they grow to between 9 and 36 cm.

Maximum size: 15 - 28 cm

Depth: 2 - 30 m

In Sulawesi it sometimes shows a yellow band due to other similar species in the same area.

Head scales reach forward to the level of the front edge of the eye or just before it.

Pelvic fins moderately long, reaching almost to the level of the anus.

Color: Upper body dark grey or olive brown, underside silvery white.

Presence of a narrow, silvery-white stripe between the eyes and the snout,

directly behind the nostrils.

Base of pectoral fin with black bar.

 Maximum length: 23 cm

Depth: 1 - 25 metres

They have yellow stripes on the head,

a dark red-edged pearly white stripe runs from the mouth to the soft dorsal fin.

A whitish spot can be seen just below the base of the rear half of the soft dorsal fin rays.

Feeds on polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans and small fish.

Is often infested by the parasite Anoplodiscus on the pectoral fins and the upper body surface.
