Introduction


There are 12 genera with 40 species.

The upper and lower jaws are the same length

and there are numerous needle-like teeth in the mouth.

Large marine species can grow up to 2 m long.

Flat needlesfish or Barred longtom

Maximum length: 100 cm

Depth: 0.1 - 5m

Very difficult to photograph, always swims just below the water surface.

Body has dark stripes.

Needle-shaped body with short snout.

The lower part of the caudal fin is longer than the upper part.

Platybelone argalus

Keeltail needlefish or Keeled needlefish

Maximum length: 50 cm

Depth: 0.1 - 5 m

Very difficult to photograph, always swims just below the water surface.

Tail root on both sides with broad, flattened, lateral keel.

Silvery needle-shaped body, upper jaw slightly shorter than the lower jaw.

Maximum length: 130 cm mostly 90 cm

Depth: 0.1 - 5 m

Usually swim directly under the water surface.
