Introduction
Sie haben ihren Namen, weil sie ihn Schneckenhäusern oder ähnlichen hohen Gegenständen leben. Dieses Verhalten ist für sie lebensnotwendig, da ihr Hinterteil weich und ungeschützt ist.
Wegen ihres Wachstums brauchen sie immer größere Häuser.

Beide Scheren haben Löffelspitzen, wobei die linke grösser ist.
Dunkelrot mit weißen Punkten, Beinspitzen schwarz.
Allesfresser.

Red-banded hermit crab, Red-striped hermit crab,
Halloween hermit crab or Cone shell hermit crab
Beine und Scheren rotgelb geringelt, mit weißem abgeflachtem Carapax.
Lebt auf algenbewachsenen Kalkfelsen von Riffdächern und Lagunen sowie auf Geröll, bis in eine Tiefe von 20 m.
Zum Fressen bevorzugt er Conus - Schnecken, dessen Gehäuse er dann auch übernimmt.

Lives on algae-covered limestone rocks of reef roofs and lagoons as well as on rubble, down to a depth of 20 metres.
It prefers to eat Conus snails, whose shells it then also takes.

Maximale Länge: 10 cm
Linke Schere viel größer als die Rechte.
Sie lebt auf Land und Geröll und ist nachtaktiv.
Sie trägt Anemonen zu ihrer Verteidigung auf Ihrem Gehäuse.
Wenn sie ein größeres Gehäuse braucht nehmen Sie die Anemonen beim Umzug mit.

Red reef hermit crab or Scarlet hermit crab
Maximale Größe: 2,5 cm
Leuchtend rot, einige mit weißen Punkten und grünliche Augen auf blassen Stielen.
Tagsüber in kleinen Gruppen im Riff.
Scheu, bei Annäherung ziehen sie sich in ihr Schneckenhaus zurück, wartet man jedoch geduldig, kommen sie nach einiger Zeit wieder raus.

Pagurus brevidactylus ( Kurzfinger-Einsiedlerkrebs )
Shortfinger hermit crab
Maximale Größe: 1,80 - 2,50 cm
Maximale Tiefe: 0 - 50 m
Diese Krebse brauchen zu ihrem Schutz die Schalen von Gastropoden ( Gehäuseschnecken ).
Wächst der Krebs, braucht er demnach auch ein neues größeres Zuhause, und da es viele Arten von ihnen gibt, kommt es schon mal zu Streitigkeiten, wer wo einziehen darf.
Hat der Krebs ein neues Zuhause gefunden, zieht er seinen Hinterleib aus der alten Schale und steckt diesen dann sehr schnell in das neue Heim. Sehr schnell eben darum da er in der Zeit des Umzugs sehr verletzlich und ungeschützt vor Fressfeinden ist.

As the crayfish grows, it needs a new, larger home, and as there are many species of crayfish, there are sometimes disputes about who gets to live where.
Once the crayfish has found a new home, it pulls its abdomen out of the old shell and very quickly puts it into the new home. Very quickly because it is very vulnerable and unprotected from predators during the relocation period.
